The Samurai believe in living as if they are already dead.
Here's an excerpt from a book that talks about this belief of the Samurai.
"Those who are reluctant to give up their lives and embrace death are not true warriors.... Go to the battlefield firmly confident of victory, and you will come home with no wounds whatever. Engage in combat fully determined to die and you will be alive; wish to survive in the battle and you will surely meet death. When you leave the house determined not to see it again you will come home safely; when you have any thought of returning you will not return."
Interestingly, the Bible talks about the same thing too...
"The man who loves his life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life."
To apply this at work, I've learned to practice this principle of working as if you've already been fired. Do what is right and necessary, don't need to try to please anyone just because I am afraid of losing my job.
I feel so powerful because of that.
